While every story out of Haiti in the last year seems to be of death and destruction, chanteuse Emetine Michel's Rasin Kreyol (Times Square) tells another story. Its the story of the beauty of Haiti and of how there is a will to help put the country back together. Michel, a charismatic singer who was raised in Haiti, studied music in Detroit and now resides in New York (where the album was recorded, using Haitian musicians). Having emerged with the nouvel jenerasyon of the early '90s, her style is lyrical, but the lyrics have teeth: "Haiti is our misfortune / Haiti is our happiness / We are not a diaspora / We just have been trapped."
