For Kitka, the holidays are all about kickin' it with the solstice, Balkan-style. The women's vocal ensemble eschew traditional Western arrangements in favor of mesmerizing, bending harmonies from Macedonia, Bulgaria, and other Slavic nations. Kitka delve into centuries' old incantations and melodies with an impressive vocal agility, sometimes singing in a style that borders on meditation, at other times punctuating complex village chants with those oh-so-Balkan howling trills. Always pitch-perfect, these ladies summon an ancient elegance that's pre-Ren Faire corruption and truly lovely. Kitka perform selections from their latest CD, Wintersongs (Rock Paper Scissors). Accompanists Rumen "Sali" Shopov (Macedonian tambura), Kaila Flexer (violin), and Tobias Roberson (dumbek) highlight the performance. 4 p.m., Lake Merritt Church, 1330 Lakeshore, Oakl. $18-$20.
