Eight women from California who produce dissonant, asymmetrical rhythms, lush harmonies and seemingly impossible arrangements based on traditional Eastern European women's songs may not seem like a surefire plan for success, but for 25 years Kitka has done more than any one else to keep these trad tunes alive. The language may be foreign, but anyone can easily comprehend the emotion they convey through their breathtaking open voice style. For their latest, Kitka deliver a set of songs that bring the listener into a stark, icy cold landscape while hinting at the warmer side of life that keeps driving the spirit even when it feels like the deep freeze will never end.
