Nashville City Paper, CD Review >>

Motifs (DRG) from the Paris Combo combines swing licks and hot jazz references with French pop and cabaret influences, a merger that sometimes gets more cute than satisfying. When operating at its best, the trumpet or bugle solos of David Lewis and guitar of Potzi inject some vitality into the arrangements and spice Belle du Berry’s lead vocals. Other times things can become so playful it lacks distinction or so chaotic it loses interest. The songs where everything clicks do outnumber the duds, and there are moments on numbers like “High, Low, In,” “Etoile Pâle” or “Discordance” when you get reminders of what the Hot Club days were like and hints of the excitement generated by European musicians joining premier jazz soloists like Benny Carter or Bill Coleman. While the style leans more toward pop than jazz or world music, there’s just enough unpredictability and sense of fun in the songs on Motifs to elevate it.
