Motion Trio Acoustic Accordions is spirited accordion ethnic music at its best.

'Train to Heaven' really gets things rolling as it picks up steam, lifting listeners from any doldrums; 'Crazy Paris' is even better than the best French accordion music.

'Balkan Dance' reminded me of blues harmonica players 'riffing back up' sounds, then took off in two different directions at once: one reminiscent of traditional Balkan dance, the other in a flight to outer space.

How does Motion Trio get such amazing sounds from their instruments? Two ways: they are very gifted musicians who have many years of not only playing but studying music at some of Europe's most prestigious music academies, and their instruments are custom built by the best accordion makers in Europe.

They have more range than standard accordions and the three instruments were designed to be played together - and play they do, from tangos to classical, dance rhythms to avant guard.

I hope this group comes to America and plays festivals in Louisiana, where they could listen to and jam with Cajun and Zydeco musicians; but most of all I hope they come to California for the Cotati Accordion Festival.

Until then, PICTURES FROM THE STREET  is an exciting, diverse blend of accordion sounds pushing the instrument beyond traditional boundaries. 03/20/05 >> go there
