Nashville City Paper, Review >>

Pedro Luis Ferrer inverts, twists and reshapes Cuban rhythms on Rústico (Escondida). He sometimes does this by blending extremely unusual sounds, as with the sandwiching of Andean elements and harmonies with African rhythms on “Como Viviré, Mi Cholita?” He sometimes seems to be following the patterns established by percussionist Basilio Perodin, but then will veer sharply away and establish his own direction while second guitarist Lerlys Morales will add counterpoint that also doesn’t exactly follow established musical formula. The results on these 13 songs are songs that can be lush, abrasive, jarring and even seem disconnected but always eventually wind up being exciting and memorable thanks to Ferrer’s dashing statements and solos. This isn’t the pastoral fare popularized by the Buena Vista Social Club. It is subversive, arresting and very different from almost everything else that has reached these shores recently.  03/03/05 >> go there
