Smother, CD Review >>

Cuban music is the best export that Cuba has to offer—cigars or no cigars. His mixture of the genres of changui from the east mountains in Guantanamo and trova espirituana of Santi Spiritus as well as coros de claves of Central Cuba has him dubbing “Rustico” in his own words, changuisa, an invented genre that blends them all together for a refreshing Cuban sound. Rather than employing the traditional Cuban sound of the rumba box, Pedro uses the Peruvian cajon for inventive percussion that also includes the marimbula, clave, bongos, and cowbell. Surrounding it all is beautiful vocal harmonies occasionally tapping his daughter Lena Ferrer on several songs to weigh in with her melodic chirping. As Pedro Luis Ferrer allows worlds to collide, whether they be African, Peruvian, Andean, or Cuban, he produces revolutionary music that simply must be heard.
