His story reads like a revolutionary dream. After recording the album, the CD was banned in Cuba, but continues to transform its people in what Ferrer calls “changüisa” style. This term, invented by Ferrer himself refers to the bringing together of “trovaespirituana” (from Santi Spiritus) and coros de claves, two styles from Central Cuba where Ferrer was born. Ferrer also gave up a band for small, often improvised music played just for the sake of playing.
“Anyone could bring any instrument: an accordion; a drum…that’s how we played: We rotate instruments, bring in new elements if we want.” Ferrer has definitely added a fresh sound to the beauty and pain found in Cuba, especially with percussionist Basilio Perdon playing the clave, cow bell, and bongos to sound like a regular upright bass. An album that is an experience not to be missed.
