Two Cuban guitarists explore their nation's storied music traditions in strikingly different fashions on a pair of exceptional new releases. The title Rustico (Escondida) says much about the stylistic orientation of the latest from Pedro Luis Fcnrer, while the title of Havana Blues Mambo (Zoho), by Pablo Menndez, is equally telling. The tres-playing Ferrer works within the tradition of such established styles as son and changui, supported by a small vocal cho rus and percussion ensemble. He occasional ly taps the folkloric majesty of Andean region styles, incorpo rating the Peruvian cajon into the group. The intertwining of strings, voices, and rustic rhythms casts a hypnotic spell.
