Using and reinventing tradition, Cuban musician Pedro Luis Ferrer redefines himself in Rustico, drawing on his country’s rich musical traditions, transforming them to create new meaning and a new word, changuisa, to describe it. Irony and word play are integral. “I am my own version of what is Cuban,” Ferrer says. “I am my own version of changui…I am even my own version of the Cuban revolution. Traditionalists in Cuba might tell you my music is not as traditional as it might sound. I use tradition, to reinvent it, to join pieces that were separated.” Check it out!
