Shepherd Express, CD Review >>
The descendent of Ukrainian immigrants to Argentia's remote northeast, accordionist Chango Spasiuk is credited for breathing new life into chamame, a rural music that shares affinity wiht tango and polka. The more balladic numbers on Spasiuk's latest CD would not sound out of place blaring from the jukebox of a Mexican restaurant, albeit the twinge of melancholy is felt more strongly. Where previously Spasiuk experimented with electric instruments and a drum kit, with Terefero he has returned to an all-acoustic sound, tub-thumping string bass bringing up the bottom, melodies strummed on guitar and accordion taking the lead.
