No wonder King Sunny Ade picked up the Minister of Enjoyment title. Few musics are as simultaneously easygoing and intense as the gentle juju shock waves of percussive chatter, finger-lace guitars, and call-and-response vocals that he and his bands have produced since the 1970s. For many now-nearly-geezerly global grooveologists, King Sunny’s legendary 1983 Hollywood Palladium gig was their first introduction to large-scale African-pop brilliance and dance slinkiness. But what most of us didn’t know at the time is that we had been ripped off. Playing for a mere couple of hours back in Lagos would have been unheard of, since the band typically throbs till dawn. King Sunny’s current tour, titled "A Royal Night Party Celebration," is his first in the States modeled closer to the participatory homegrown style, an almost-all-nighter scheduled for a 4 a.m. finale. This is a rare opportunity to hear how far one of the planet’s great grooves can be stretched. 6021 Hollywood Blvd., Hlywd. (213) 480-3232. Ade also performs a free show at UCLA’s Covel Grand Horizon Ballroom, Wed., 7:30 p.m. (Tom Cheyney)
