Zook Beat, Conversations with King Sunny Ade >>

Zook Beat had the pleasure to talk with the Juju king during his recent US tour. For almost four decades now, King Sunny Ade has been preaching and sharing his love of music with the world. Whether in Nigeria jamming at wedding, birth, death, marriage, and life ceremonies, or on the road around the globe, King Sunny Ade feels at home on stage, and loves the exuberance of his devoted followers. Talking about his journey and his relationship to music Ade says: "I have been injected with music, it's a gift! I live, breath and will die with music, and I am here to preach it. Preach my love for the stuff".

On this tour, King Sunny Ade and The African Beats comprises of 17 members on stage. Playing and jamming the Juju Beat; it is characterized by tight vocal harmonies, intricate guitar work, backed by traditional talking drums, percussion instruments, and even adding the unusual pedal steel guitar and accordian. One can see that Ade and his group are infused with the Juju groove and have a lot of fun playing and communicating with their audience and each other. Many compositions are improvised and guided by Ade, who with a certain touch, sign, and body language can let his fellow band members know where they are heading. "That's part of the fun" mentions Ade, when we talk about composition and improvisation. "I can just lift my head, or touch my guitar in a certain way, and off we go. We have worked together for so long (some members have been with Ade three decades), we are like a family and we know how to groove".

When asked about his process of compositions Ade talks about a collaborative process, just like improvisation, where his group partakes in the writing of the songs - that is the lyrics. The actual music comes to life based on rhythmic structures, interwoven together, and the melodic components are added later.

Known as the "ambassador of entertainment" in his homeland, Ade also is a keen business man and music advocate for younger musicians. He heads a foundation and three independent labels. One solely devoted to his work, and two others promoting young up and coming African musicians. The man is busy... but loves what he does, and that's what keeps him going...all in the name of music.
