The charismatic King Sunny Ade is a superstar in Nigeria along the lines of BB King or James Brown. Best known for his pioneering role in bringing juju music -- a melodeic Afrobeat-influenced gumbo of western pop and traditional Yoruba rhythms -- from the slums of Lagos to the rest of the world. King Sunny's grooving mash-up of electric guitars and talking drums sustains songs about working class life, but sounds as majestic as his name. He holds court at this venerable venue with an unusual acoustic appearance that conjures images of urban life in the Motherland with all of its conflict, beauty, and, of course, palm wine.
