Putamayo Presents Mali (Putamayo) highlights samples of contemporary sounds coming from that key African nation. Issa Bagayogo’s “Bana” and Moussa Diallo’s “Maninda” feature crackling electric bass and poignant Malian lute, each instrument providing the backdrop to powerful, moving lead vocals. Other poignant selections include “Kanawa” by the duo of Habib Koité & Bamada, Tom Diakite’s “Fala,” and Boubacar Traoré’s highly sentimental, romantic work “Kanou.” The liner notes are done in three languages, and the songs sequence highlights electric and acoustic players while tracing the stylistic evolution in the nation from vintage and traditional tunes to current and modern works. The enhanced CD version of this session includes a fabulous live performance of “Batoumambe” by Habib Koité that’s equal parts historic salute and up-to-date showcase. 04/21/05 >> go there
