Nashville City Paper, CD Review >>

The great Zimbabwean guitarist, vocalist and producer Oliver Mtukudzi’s Nhava (Heads Up) has compelling songs and marvelous solo and group playing. Mtukudzi is sometimes reflective and sometimes angry, but he’s always vocally appealing and arresting on such songs as “Ninipa,” “Hazvireve,” “Tiregereiwo,” and “Pindirai.” While twin electric guitarists Clive Mukundu and Philani Dube pepper his acoustic statements with their own twists, licks and lines, and bassist Never Mpofu and drummer Clive Mutyasira provide the primary rhythms, Mtukudzi sings with passion and authority. Some songs get further harmonic colors and textures from keyboardist Jairos Hambahamba or female vocalists Mary Bell and Namatayi Mubariki. But it’s the dynamic singing and playing of Oliver Mtukudzi that sets the pace and defines the territory on Nhava.
