Oliver "Tuku" Mtukudzi has led his band the Black Spirits for the last 25 years, a very troubled time in his beloved home of Zimbabwe. In song, Tuku is able to address his country's grievous postcolonial problems, including the catastrophic impact of AIDS and the depletion of the environment, without sounding strident — in part due to his incorporation of the lilting and hypnotic rhythms of the mbira, the thumb piano of Zimbabwe's Shona people. His voice, resonant and rich, delivers sorrow and sweetness alike over layers of guitar and African percussion. His worldly but never weary musings on this year's Nhava affirm his status as a national treasure. (PDS)  06/14/05
