Legendary Zimbabwean singer/songwriter Oliver Mtukudzi, along with long time band-mates the Black Spirits, anchors near the Oakland port for his Yoshi's debut tonight, performing a mix of traditional hymns alongside melodies from his newest creation, Nhava. Naming his album after the Zimbabwean word for "carrying bag," Mtukudzi's motive is quite simple: to impart simple, poignant nuggets of African wisdom to audiences through a grab bag of musical styles — American R&B, South African township pop, traditional African rhythms, and as tonight's venue suggests — jazz. As Mtukudzi claims, his music encapsulates sounds "from Cape Town to Cairo," paying homage to a long line of little known yet powerful African histories. (SNS) 06/22/05
