Oliver Mtukudzi
"Nhava"

Lovingly known as "Tuku" in his native Zimbabwe, Mtukudzi is that country's topselling artist and one of Africa's most well known Afro-pop musicians.  Mtukudzi's positive lyrics and witty optimism are still intact on his latest recording of sprighty African pop called Nhava.  He's been around since the mid-70's and has released numerous recordings where he sings in his native Shona as well as English.  Oliver began as a member of Wagon Wheels, a band that also featured another Afro-pop legend Thomas Mapfumo.  Tuku later formed Black Spirits, the band that has backed him throughout his career.  Tuku has been heavily influenced by chimurenga, the genre pioneered by Mapfumo that is inspured by the funky rhythms of the mbira (thumb piano).  Chimurenga is just one of many styles played by Tuku and his music also incorporates Western pop influences, South African mbaqanga, the perky Zimbabwean pop style JIT as well as the traditional kateke drumming of his clan, the Korekore.
