Finally emerging from his wingman role for such famed musicians as John Mellencamp, Patty Griffin, and Paul Simon, Michael Ramos -- also known as Charanga Cakewalk -- glides through the smooth sounds of his hip debut album, Loteria de la Cumbia Lounge. The album was recorded at The Cumbia Lounge in Austin, Texas, and in hotel rooms and dressing rooms across the country. The CD reinvents the Hammond B3 and Wurlitzer electric piano, two of the intruments Ramos plays. He also offers trumpet, accordion, and vocals, and guest musicians play guitar and cello and sing on several tracks.

Ramos transforms the brash accordion often heard in Mexican music into compelling, almost ominous element in "Charanga Cakewalk." One of my favorite tracks is "Chispas," a hypnotic piece Ramos structures around Spanish guitar and layered vocals. This mellow album is a creative, multicultural masterpiece that will play well on your store stereo and draw new fans to Latin-flavored music.
