Oh Austin, Texas. How thy plague me and tease me with your incredibly fantastic music scene. If only we could lift you out of the bowels of Texas and move you to a cooler state. Yes Charanga Cakewalk, which I’ll pun at you is no musical cakewalk, is from that great city. While Michael Ramos (aka Charanga Cakewalk) was playing accordion and keyboards for the likes of John Mellencamp, Patty Griffin, Paul Simon, the Rembrandts, and the Bodeans, he was always considering a solo outing. These fruits of that solo labor are so impressive that who knows if he will or will want to venture back into the studio as a session player or touring companion. His songs take that imaginary drawn border between electronica and Latin rock and whisks it away into the dust bowl of central Texas. The name Charanga Cakewalk came from a sign in a church parking lot while the name comes partially from the name of Ramos’ recording studio and the name of a Mexican-style bingo. Does it get more chill than this? I doubt it. You gotta love the fresh Hex Hector remix too!
