Smother, Cd Review >>
Review - Lura, a Lisbon native, is bringing back attention to the Cape Verde / Senegal sound with a defined pop nuance to accompany it. Before its independence in 1975, the church and colonial government forbid certain forms of music including the accordion-driven funana. Its this form of music that Lura performs, which originally was performed by a dozen or more women beating a batuku rhythm on stacks of clothes called tchabeta, while a lead singer would croon poetry with various themes as a sensual dance known as torno accompanied it. The music form is quite interesting with Latin and African rhythms and Lura’s voice is magical. Along with the CD is an interesting DVD, which boasts some live concert footage. 06/14/05 >> go there
