Go as far West as you can go and still land on African terra firma and you're in Cape Verde, which musically tends to mean Cesaria Evora to Westerners but now might also mean Lura. Her cd Di Korpa Ku Alma (Escondida) first made me skeptical as she looks just too suspiciously alluring—not that any music marketer would market looks over talent. But Lula's singing is beautiful too. From the island of Sao Vicente. she favors lesser-known African song styles, as opposed to Evora's trademark mornas, and her music is more upbeat and guitar-driven. The semi-cheesy videos included aren't worth the software.  07/01/05
