That's Lura, as in alluring. A Lisbon-raised daughter of émigrés from the Cape Verde Islands, Lura has a rich, sensuous voice with deep veins of exotic nuance. She concentrates on the music of Santiago, the most African of the Cape Verdes, which juggles the islands' mix of Portuguese and African influences but incorporates more aggressive rhythms than morna, the languid, melancholy style favored by her famous mentor Cesaria Evora. On Lura's latest, Di Korpu Ku Alma (Escondida), her lithe voice skips among percolating rhythms and fashions achingly infectious melodies. Lura and her band will also perform earlier during a free workshop on Cape Verdean music at the University of Minnesota's Bell Museum at 4:00 p.m. $18/$20 at the door. 7:30 pm. —Rick Mason 12/14/06 >> go there
