Singer's voice has subtle beauty
Sounds of Africa's Cape Verde can be heard Saturday in Carrboro

Lura (Maria de Lurdes Pina Assuncao) often gets compared by default to Cesaria Evora, the musician who first brought the sounds of Africa's Cape Verde islands to an international audience. On her 2005 CD release "Di Korpu Ku Alma" ("Of Body and Soul"), Lura--born in Portugal to Cape Verdean parents--also pays homage to Cape Verdean music such as the accordion-based funana style, and the batuku rhythm, played on a folded stack of cloth call the tchabeta.

"Di Korpu" also is accessible, high quality music. The 13 songs on this collection are highly rhythmic at times, at other times more plaintive, but always with a strong sense of melody. Listening to Lura's voice, one senses that she has the physical power of a Broadway shouter but resists the temptation to belt it out, preferring to allow her voice's more subtle beauty to express the song lyrics.

Lura will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday at the ArtsCenter in Carrboro. She'll be accompanied by a rhythm section similar to the ensemble on "Di Korpu": Antonio (Toy) Vieira on piano, Edeyaldo Figueiredo on bass guitar, Carlos Paris Morais on drums and Aurelio dos Santos on guitar. Come prepared to listen to some melodies and rhythms that will stay with you.
