Lura sets immigrant tale to some beautiful music

When it comes to the music of Cape Verde, many people think of Cesaria Evora. Her fusion of African, Portuguese and other genres has sparked international interest in her homeland.

But these days, young Portuguese singer also is capturing the majestic sounds of tiny Cape Verde.

Lura performs Dec 8 at Miami's Carnival Center, 300 Biscayne Blvd. She is touring to promote her latest CD, Di Korpu Ku Alma (Of Body and Soul). The 31 -year-old is among a new generation of musicians rediscovering the sounds of their homeland, a nation of islands off the African coast.

Born Maria de Lurdes Assuncao Pina to Cape Verdean parents, Lura began singing at 17. She was influenced by Portuguese and North American music but was inspired by the sounds of Cape Verde. She sings in Kriolu, a blend of Portuguese and African dialects.

Lura toured as a backup singer for Evora, who sings mournas, a sometimes mournful music. But Lura performs the lively styles of batuku and funana.

She interprets the traditions of Cape Verde, singing of daily life and echoing the batuku rhythms women on Santiago island play on stacks of clothes as they work.

"The women in Cape Verde spend a lot of time together, working and talking, and that is how batuku started; from the women of Santiago," the singer said through publicists. "Now I and others are making kind of batuju, but singing alone, not in a group."

Her band includes drums, bass, guitar, keyboards and percussion. Incorporating a variety of international rhythms, it provides the perfect back drop for Lura to sing of the immigrant experience.

The show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets, $20, are available through carnivalcenter.org or 305-949-6722.
