Emerging world music star Lura will make Miami debut at Carnival Center

Lura, the emerging world music star from Cape Verde, will make her Miami debut on Friday, Dec. 8 at p.m. at the Carnival Center for the Performing Arts. Performing selections from her recent international debut album "Di Korpu Ku Alma" (Of Body and Soul), Lura will be in South Florida for one night only in the Center's Studio Theater, which will be transformed into "Studio Lounge," a cabaret-style club setting with intimate tables. Reviewing her recording debut, Rolling Stone stated: "Her tunes are sunnier than fados, often integrating elements of R&B and funk. And her powerhouse vocals make even serious minded tracks like "Vazulina" - a rebuke of Africans who straighten the kink out of their hair - sound like love songs."

Originating from a rich blend of trade route cultures that has created an unusual musical tradition of intoxicating rhythms and piercing melodies first made famous by "barefoot" diva Cesaria Evora, Lura's act is a unique mix of Afro-pop and Brazilian beats that showcase her Portuguese and West African roots. "Lura explores the musical moods of all of Cape Verde's islands, mixes in a whisper of Latin groove and sweetens with a kiss of pop," says the Montreal Gazette.

Born in Portugal to parents from the Cape Verde Islands off the coast of West Africa, Lura is part of a new generation of Cape Verdean artists rediscovering the music of their ancestral homeland.

Using an improvised upbeat rhythm called batuku and the funana dance, Lura creates unique, ethereal contemporary sound that has electrified audiences around the globe.

Since releasing her album, Di Korpu Ku Alma, Lura has been nominated for and received several awards includ ing Best Newcomer at the BBC Radio 3 Awards and Best World Music Album at Les Victoires De la Musique in France.  12/07/06
