Christopher Hedge
"The New Heroes"

This disc is the accompanying music to the Robert Redford hosted PBS series, The New Heroes.  The music is written as accompanying vignettes to the segments from the series.  The series tells the stories of activists, also knows as "social entrepreneurs", from all over the globe that are working to alleviate poverty, illness, unemployment, and bringing education to poor people around the world.  Those that live on the margins are usually the forgotten masses, and some of the New Heroes work to bring justice and oppurtunity to them.  The music is delightful and moody.  Hedge has a sense of place as he composes for each segment.  He has traveled to many of the places highlighted in the series and that helps with his compositions.  There are a number of narrative snippets from the series intertwined with the music to help put it all into context.  The songs are crafted with a sense of global belonging and feature some African and Indian instruments to place them geographically into the proper segments.  You needn't have seen the series to listen to the disc, though, as the tracks ably pull their weight outside of the series. 11/01/05
