Angolan musician Waldemar Bastos has released Renascence [Times Square Records], his first recording in seven years. Bastos has lived in exile since Angola's civil war broke out, but has never forgotten his homeland. He finally returned to Angola in 2003 to visit, and that trip inspired the music on this recording. Says Bastos of the recording, "I wanted to blend traditional and modern elements, because the future is only possible when you know the past. Going back was the key to this album, because it was the first time I had ever seen peace in my country and a hope and a belief in the future in people's faces." [www.waldemarbastos.com]
