Compelling Angolan singer/guitarist Waldemar Bastos lived in exile during his country's civil war, but his 2003 return inspired him to write and release "Renascence," a wonderful album that radiates romance and verve. Singing in Portuguese in a gently raspy, souful voice, Bastos croons of love and love for hsi country over skipping, buoyant African rhythms.
