For some fine Angolan imisic check Renascence (Times Square) by Waldemar Bastos. If you know the music of his countryman Bonga that should give some idea of the plaintive, deep-voiced melodies here; Bastos, in exile for many years, revisited his homeland and this cd is a paean of longing and hope for a troubled nation which may be emerging to better days. What Bastos aptly calls "three singing African guitars" take charge in songs which follow the classic Congolese model of ending with sembene or jam, even though the great playing here is faded out too soon. The ballads are more of an acquired taste, and an atrocious tacked-on remix with Chaka Demus toasting must be blamed on noted Jamaican producer "Groucho" Smykle, who otherwise does fine by Bastos, Other than the horrid ending, when Renascence, when Renascence is good, it's very very good.  07/01/05
