Relix, Waldemar Bastos >>

For N'Banza Congo native Waldemar Bastps, politics and music are inseparable. His life has been filled with social turmoil, growing up in the midst of Angola's struggle for independence. For years his home rotated between Lisbon, Germany, Angola and Brazil, picking up musical influences along the way. When David Byrne randomly purchased one of his CDs in Portugal, he went on to produce Pretaluz, which put Bastos on the international map. Seven years later Renascene continues his socially informed street smarts. Early inspirations of rumba, tango and waltzes fire a passionate, driven record, swerving between Bastos' sturdy poetics and gorgeous guitar play. Pleas for strength and courage ring throughout "Paz Pao de Amor" as hypnotic layers of six-string unfold beneath a hearty rhythm. Equally dangerous acoustically- the string section of the title track adds soft flourishes-Bastos puts much more than his 50 years into this work. To prove foresight, a stellar club mix of "Pitanga Madurinha," with Chaka Demus handling toasting duties, closes this memorable effort. * Derek Beres  08/01/05
