Miami Poetry Review, Seu Jorge to Play I/O Lounge >>

For those of you who know who Seu Jorge is, the title of the article is sufficient to draw enthusiasm. For those of you who don’t, let me clue you in. You may not know Seu Jorge by name, but if you’ve seen Wes Anderson’s “The Life Aquatic” then you may know him as the tall dark crew member of Team Zissou that was always playing the guitar and singing.

After hearing the Life Aquatic Soundtrack, I immediately loved Jorge’s sound, and although I don’t understand Portuguese, it turns out that all the songs from the soundtrack are covers of old David Bowie songs. An interesting side note, besides Jorge’s fame in Brazil as a pretty big pop star, is that he is also an up-and-coming movie star, and appeared in the movie “City of God” as Handsome Ned.

Anyway, after I bought the soundtrack and started to really dig Jorge, I began searching the net for more material to download. I ended up finding and downloading a few tracks that I really liked from one of his older albums “Carolina”, which is a mix of samba based pop fused with rap and funk.

A few months later, I received a leaked copy of Seu Jorge’s new unreleased album “Cru”, and found it to be quite different from Jorge’s “Carolina.” After listening to Cru, I found that is composed with more of an earthy traditional samba sound, rather than the modern pop sound found on Carolina, and the few tracks I heard I really liked.

Earlier this year, a good friend of mine saw Seu Jorge perform live at “Joe’s Pub” in NYC. He told me Jorge was amazing live, and so when I saw that Jorge was set to perform as part of Rhythm Foundation’s fall concert series, I was really psyched. Cru is set for release on September 06, 2005. Tickets are already available for Jorge’s performance at I/O lounge on September 8, at 8pm. A suggestion to the frugal, you can save a few bucks if you purchase your tickets in advance online.
