One o fthe most compelling new examples of cutting-edge Brazilian music comes from a guy known for his work in film. But with the release of Seu (pronounced “sur”) Jorge’s worldwide debut “Cru,” that will change. Jorge is famous thanks to his roles as Knockout Ned in Fernando Meirelles’ “City of God” and Pele dos Santos in Wes Anderson’s “The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.”

But his original love is music. It helped soothe him growing up homeless in one of Rio’s infamous favelas (slum communities). That almost sacrosanct view of music shows on “Cru,” which means “raw.” And raw is what this disc is. Its main instrument is Jorge’s voice – rich, deep, warm and confessional. When he sings, it seems as if he’s personally engaging you and no one else.

Each tune uses swaying samba rhythms courtesy of a simple acoustic guitar, indigenous Brazilian instruments and percussion and subtle use of electronics, ambient effects and hip-hop beats. Original songs touch on his favela roots to the disdain of female silicone implants.

“Cru” walks a tightrope between traditional acoustic Brazilian samba and stark modern pop. Throw in Jorge’s memorable songs and expressive pipes and it’s sure to cook one’s emotions.
