Seu Jorge - Cru
(Wrasse Records)

Brazil's Seu Jorge was a standout on the soundtrack to The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. It's tempting to see this as his best fate at this point in his career, as director Wes Anderson's casual, surrealistic understatement balances 's propensity for frenetic over production, Jorge has an intriguing voice, rough but soulful, dark but sonorous. When he keeps things simple, like he does on "Fiore de la Citta" or "Una Mujer" he can evoke emotions like a fado master, but he can't seem to decide between history and hip-hop. Cru signals Jorge's great promise, but also highlights his inconsistency in choosing songs and arrangements. "Chatterton" is simply sonic slop. As for his cover of Elvis's "Don't," he shouldn't have. Jorge needs to learn that there's more to being a topnotch singer than just a great voice. Seu Jorge will perform at Pearl Street on September 9.
