By John Sinkevics

The world should consider itself lucky to experience the nearly indescribable music that springs from the mind and voice of Seu Jorge. After all, this talented artist comes from a Brazilian slum - a favela - where he worked repairing tires as a kid to support his impoverished family.

Now, he crafts spare-but- intriguing pop accompanied on acoustic guitar, synthesizer and a smattering of wondrous percussion gadgets, accentuated by his pleasing, subtle, raw vocals. The guy who landed a part in the film "City of God" (set in the favelas) and who contributed several tracks to the "Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou" soundtrack performs Friday at Calvin College. And even folks who can't understand the Portuguese lyrics (with the exception of an English cover of Lieber and Stoller's "Don't") will appreciate the laid-back beauty of Jorge's music.

Seu forge performs at 8p.m, Friday in the Calvin College Fine Arts Center. Tickets, $12 ($4 Calvin students), at the box office or by calling 526-6282.
