SEU JORGE.
MERSHON AUDITORIUM STAGE
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 17

For this black box show, the Wexner Center is bringing two talents from Brazil. Headlining is Seu Jorge, who may be more familiar for his movie appearances than his music. He played Mane Galinha, the crimelord, in City of God, and his Portuguese interpretations of David Bowie songs were about the only entertaining component to Wes Anderson's The Life Aquatic.

Jorge is on tour in support of Cru (Wrasse), his debut album. It's not a great record by any means, but Jorge has a charismatic, dry voice that works well in the minimalist setting that pervades the record. Interestingly, his cover of Elvis' "Don't" is particularly evocative, while Serge Gainsbourg's "Chatterton" would have been better off left alone.

Opening is Celso Fonseca, a longtime collaborator of Caetano Veloso, arguably Brazil's most well known musical export of the last couple decades. Fonseca's latest, Rive Gauche Rio (Six Degrees), is a more interesting listen than Cru, blending Joao Gilberto- style bossa nova guitar playing with light touches of flute, percussion and electronic instrumentation. Fonseca also takes to covering other artists, expertly redoing Damien Rice’s "Delicate" with a simple backing of drums and small amounts of guitar. Throughout the record, it is Fonseca's voice and guitar that are the centerpiece, as they will be for this solo performance.
