Relix, CD Review >>

Best known to stoners for strumming sweet nylon-string David Bowie covers in Wes Anderson's The Life Aquatic, Brazilian sensation Seu Jorge has also issued the year's sultriest album. Fizzy minimalist cocktails of simmering favela percussion and acoustic guitar (the opening "Tive Razao"), dirty synth combos (Serge Gainsbourg'a "Chatterton"), and wee-hour balladry
(the perfect mixdisc cut "Don't") brand Cru a must for any well-appointed space-age bachelor pad. On tracks like the Italian-sung "Fiore De La Citta," which frames Jorge's amazing voice with sparse keyboards, resourceful orchestrations make Cru equal parts accessible and arty. Mysteriously, its grooves feel equally translatable to summer nights, snowy afternoons, or autumn rainstorms-the rare album that's sublime to listen to alone, but even more so with close company.
