Chicago Tribune, World Music fest gives birth to Music Without Borders (excerpts) >>

-by Howard Reich

Perhaps it was inevitable that the World Music Festival--an immensely popular September event--would spread its wings.

This summer, the spirit of that festival will animate a new series, Music Without Borders, presented in Millennium Park by the city's Department of Cultural Affairs (which also organizes the World Music Festival).

Music Without Borders will open with three summertime concerts, then continue with three additional Millennium Park concerts presented as part of the World Music Festival. Millennium Park this year will sound increasingly international from June through September.

"We wanted to bring to the stage of Millennium Park groups that otherwise might not be presented there," says Michael Orlove, a programmer at the city's Department of Cultural Affairs, who organized Music Without Borders in collaboration with Millennium Park executive director Helen Doria.

"It's a way of extending the World Music Festival," adds Orlove, "so that this kind of music becomes a fixed part of what happens in Millennium Park."

All the concerts start at 6:30 p.m., and admission is free; phone 312-742-1168.

June 29:  Seu Jourge and Amadou & Mariam. Music Without Borders opens with a double-bill featuring two of the most popular attractions from last year's World Music Festival. Brazilian singer-songwriter Jorge unfurled his warm baritone to splendid effect in Millennium Park last September, making his greatest impact when he held the stage alone, accompanied only by the sound of his own guitar. Amadou & Mariam, a duo from Mali, sold out the Park West last year, reaffirming the perpetually broadening appeal of African folkloric music.
