It sounds odd to call Seu Jorge an international star of stage and screen because, really, he's just a guy with a guitar. But millions know his voice and his face. He was the topside troubadour in Wes Anderson's quirky movie, The Life Acquatic with Steve Zissou, soothing crew members with guitar covers of David Bowie songs in Portuguese. He also played Knockout Ned, who's anything but a musician, in the harrowing City of God, a Brazilian movie about criminal life in a favela slum outside Rio de Janeiro.
But music is where Jorge got his start, and it's the reason he escaped the very slums he would later have the luxury to revisit as an actor. Jorge plays an updated style of samba, hitching classic Brazilian acoustic pop to contemporary currents. He performs at the Gleason Theater in Miami Beach on June 10 to close out the 10th annual Brazilian Film Festival of Miami. Although he doesn't appear in any of the festival's movies, with his intertwining careers he's a perfect choice to cap off the cinema marathon.
Q. When you sang Bowie songs in The Life Aquatic, how literal were you in translating his lyrics to Portuguese? Did you have to do a lot of editing and altering of the words and the meanings to make them fit your arrangements?
A. I was told by Wes Anderson, who was a massive Bowie fan, to convert the songs to Portuguese and make them songs that represented me and my country, so I did. The translations are not literal and there is a lot of creative license. Everyone, including David Bowie, loved my versions. 06/02/06
