Jorge brings new-found fame to Union

By Rob Thomas

If you happened to be on the Memorial Union Terrace this past Tuesday night, you got your appetite whetted for Seu Jorge's upcoming show next Tuesday indoors at the Union Theater.

The union was showing "The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou," Wes Anderson's loopy tale of an over-the-hill Jacques Cousteau type and his crew. Bill Murray played the intrepid ocean-farer Steve, but Jorge steals several scenes in the movie as a singing crewman fond of Portuguese covers of David Bowie songs like "Life on Mars?"

Jorge may very well pull out a few Bowie covers when he performs at 8 p.m. next Tuesday, but his musical style ranges far and wide to include both the traditional sounds of his native Brazil and more contemporary folk and blues sounds.

He was at the union last fall at the stellar Madison World Music Festival in support of his fine solo album "Cru," and next Tuesday's show coincides with the release of a concert DVD recorded at the Montreux Jazz Festival last year.

Tickets are $17 in advance for the show, $19 at the door, and available at the union box office, 800 Langdon St., and by phone at 262-2201. Students can get in for just $10.

Opening for Jorge will be the Caribbean-inspired singer Jehro, who, although born on the Mediterranean coast, plays the kind of dreamy and passionate music suitable for sunsets over water all across the globe.
