Seu Jorge
Seu Jorge isn't just another Brazilian face acting in un-pretty Brazilian movies (City of God) or silly seafaring flicks where he giddily covers Bowie songs (A Life Aquatic). In Jorge's brusque voice - lyrically and vocally - the wildly theatrical and the deeply humane become his stage. On Samba Esporte Fino and on Cru, Jorge writes of poverty and wilted romance while maintaining an elegant musical foothold steeped in the sonorousness of the samba with the swish of electronica, the honk of skronk, and a bit of hip-hop's thumpety-thump. Even when he sings of lives lived hard, he does so with a dignity and a simplicity most regal and joyful.
