SEU JORGE
CRU
Wrasse Records, 2005 Seu Jorge achieved fame with American listeners for his innovative covers of Bowie tunes in Wes Anderson's movie, The Life Aquatic. He also acted in City of God, but needed little coaching to get into that role. Raised in the slums of Rio, his sound conjures the sprightly samba spirit of his Brazilian homeland, as well as a heartfelt soul that one would expect from a singer nurtured in such abject conditions. Despite the seduc tive sound of his voice, and the upbeat cadence of the acoustic guitar, many of his lyrics confront serious issues, such as "Mania de Peitao," which criticizes silicone use in breast enlargement. His album Cru is a perfect assortment of cool breezy tunes and pensive melodies. It is an amiable sojourn for the ears. Peter Culshaw of The Telegraph wrote that Seu Jorge may be one of the "coolest men on the planet." The sounds from Cru and other works reinforce that assertion.  07/01/06
