Seu Jorgc: Live at Montreaux (DVD)

SeuJorge
(Montreaux Sounds/Eagle Vision)

You won't find any of Seu Jorge's inspired covers of David Bowie songs (the ones he did for the film The Life Acquatic with Steve Zissou, and recast on The Life Acquatic Studio Sessions) on this 6o-minute concert disc.

Jorge, a Brazilian who sings in Porteguese and was scheduled to play Bluesfest yesterday, is reluctant about being known as that Bowie guy, and here he sticks to his own compositions and a couple of non-Bowie covers.

Jorge is also an actor, most notably in Cify of God, and his own story is right out of gritty Brazilian cinema. He grew up in the of Rio, and his 16-year-old brother was shot to death by police. He turned to music, and rode commercial revival of samba to national fame. The Bowie thing made his name worldwide.

His own music is bright and lively, an envigorating, funky dose of samba, often with a message built in. Live, it's sure to be a hit with Bluesfesters who are keenly waiting for the socio-political funk blast of Michael Franti and Spearhead on the main stage tomorrow. This disc gets points for being free of annoying "effects" that mar many concert discs, but loses points for being too brief - just an hour, in luding a "percussion solo" that probably sounded great live but falls flat on DVD.

Seu Jorge played the Blacksheep Stage last night.
