Gili Garabdi (Asphalt Tango)

Aaron Cohen

Clarinetist Ioan Ivancea has a theory that Romanian Gypsies
who fled to the United States in the 19th Century helped
invent jazz. His group, Fanfare Ciocarlia, shows that he may
be on to something. This 12-piece band is set up to make a
huge sound, as can be expected when two tuba players and two
percussionists propel the reeds and horns. But what's
surprising is that this weighty group swings rather than
attacks. Fanfare Ciocarlia even performs a smoldering
rendition of Duke Ellington's "Caravan." 07/01/05 >> go there
