If somebody asked you: "where do brass bands come from," what would you say? The fact is, there are brass bands pretty much everywhere. So we'll narrow it down a bit. Try to guess, where is this one from?

Ok, we'll tell you. They're from Romania -- and they go by the name Fanfare Ciocarlia.

The band has twelve members. All of them are Gypsies or Roma. And they're all from the same eastern Romanian village of Zece Pajini, population four hundred. Band members range in age from twenty-three to sixty-nine.

Historically, brass bands have been popular in Eastern Europe. But the leader of Fanfare Ciocarlia says young musicians in the region are increasingly turning to electronic instruments. And he says modern bands are taking performing opportunities away from traditional brass ensembles. But he adds, "we're one of the last and we're the fastest of them all."

Fanfare Ciocarlia plans to tour the United States later this summer. The band's new CD is called "Ancient Secrets of Gypsy Brass."  06/24/05 >> go there
