"Queens and Kings"
Fanfare Ciocarlia (Asphalt Tango)
After the Iron Curtain fell, this band of Roma, or Gypsies, from Romania stepped into the international spotlight. Despite their roots in the frenetic brass-based tradition they mastered, here they partner with performers from other Roma communities.
One cut finds them lending their brass attack to the French Manouche jazz made famous by Django Reinhardt; another has them exploring common ground with flamenco.
This hardworking band still excels at crowd pleasing, blowing out music that is as infectious as it is powerful. Fanfare Ciocarlia stars in an upcoming documentary, making this rocking showcase a perfect entrypoint for those who will want to hear more.
