Valley Advocate, CD Review >>

Malian blues legend Boubacar Traore usually plumbs the depths of despair so deeply that he's regarded as a bit of a pessimist. Kongo Magni tackles subjects such as war, jealousy and death, but the overall tone is bright and the pacing a southing blues/trance hybrid. Traore also draws comparisons to Robert Johnson, and there's little doubt that his muscular guitar and sideman Vincent Burner's gritty harmonica would find welcome sanctuary at Delta roadhouse. But Traore 'is hard to pigeonhole. Regis Gizavo's accordion bridge on "Kanou" is more Piazzolla than pine barrens; "Horonia" evokes skiffle; and "Independance" reminds that Traore once studied in Cuba. For all of that, the percussive snaps and humps and Traore's growling voice are pure West Africa. Boubacar Traore will appear at the Iron Horse on September 25.
