Town and Village, CD Review and Concert Pick >>
One part of the legacy of the European colonizers in Africa is brass band music. One of the most enjoyable groups on the world music scene is the Gangbe Brass Band from the West African Nation of Benin. Gangbe means "the sound of metal" and refers to the trumpets, saxes, trombones, sousaphone (related to the tuba) and sometimes elaborate metal bell percussion.
Their new album is Whendo (on World Village) and it contains an ingratiating blend of brass and vocals. Segala pays tribute to Oscar Peterson's Night Train and there are also Cuban influences. Some of the sounds are authentic local ones. The group reportedly had to obtain permission from voodoo priests to use certain chants and rhythms.
