All music has a message, one can argue, but when a CD of this stature arrives its importance cannot be understated. Another World is Possible (Uncivilized World, Oct 18) unites like-minded musicians and writers in a cross-disciplinary campaign of raising awareness of anti-globalization alternatives. Wordsmiths like political thinker Noam Chomsky, Portuguese author/Nobel Prize winner Jose Saramago, activist Naomi Klein, Indian novelist Arundhati Roy and Chiapas leader Subcommander Marcos contribute poignant letters in the 50 pages of essays. On the musical side, artists pick contributions: Manu Chao in an unreleased collaboration with Tonino Carotone, "La Trampa;" Balkan brassist Emir Kusturica’s cover of The Clash’s "Lost in the Supermarket;" Asian Dub Foundation, also covering The Clash with a live "Police on my Back;" Fela Kuti’s killer rendition of "I Wanna Be Free" from the Afroshrine; and great cuts by Massive Attack, Salif Keita, Moby, Nitin Sawhney, Lee "Scratch" Perry and The Skatalites. The medium and the message are indistinguishable – the most global situation imaginable. 09/30/05
